Shinjuku Gyoen was built on the site of the private residence of Naito Tadao, a feudal lord in the Edo period. It was completed in 1906 as an imperial garden, and after World War II it was designated as a national park and opened to the public. The site covers an area of 58.3 hectares and has a circumference of 3.5 kilometers. It combines the three styles of orthopedic gardens, landscape gardens, and Japanese gardens, and is regarded as one of the most important gardens of the Meiji period.
